Matilda soccer star Lisa De Vanna has issued an apology to her fans for posting sexually explicit photographs on her public Facebook page.

De Vanna, 25, said she was embarrassed and apologised for her actions after the mother of a "distraught" 13-year-old girl complained to the Football Federation of Australia.

The soccer player, who is currently based in America, issued a statement through her club Washington Freedom, apologising to any fan who may have been offended by her photos.

"I understand that as a professional athlete, I have a duty to be a positive role model for children, women and all of our fans and I regret that my actions may have offended anyone," the Herald Sun quoted her as saying.

"I will work hard to ensure this does not happen again," she added.

A spokesperson for the club said the photos were posted without the team's knowledge and "were inconsistent with the Freedom and WPS social media policy, which had been communicated to all players."

"Lisa is embarrassed by this situation, has apologised to the organization and has removed these photos from her Facebook page," the spokesperson stated. (ANI)
